WXYZ Honored with 2 Scripps ‘Give Light Awards’ for 2019 Work

WXYZ-TV (Detroit) was awarded two Scripps “Give Light Awards” on January 30, honoring the best employee work throughout 2019.

7 Investigator Ross Jones, Assistant News Director Jodie Heisner, Editor Randy Lundquist, Photographer John Ciolino and Photographer Johnny Sartin Jr. were honored with the Creating a Better-Informed World award for the Detroit 911 investigative series.

As a result of the investigation, Detroit police made administrative and policy changes and 911 hold times were reduced by 60 percent.

WXYZ also won the award for Creating Value for our work on the first-ever PGA Tour event in the city of Detroit with the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The team that worked on the event includes News Director Rhonda LaVelle, Programming Executive Producer Sandy McPhee, Sports Anchor Brad Galli, Sales Director Tony Lamerato and Operations Manager Donn Bosquet.

Station employees were also honored for their work that was nominated for the Give Light Awards.

“I am incredibly proud of our team in Detroit,” Vice President and General Manager Mike Murri said. “The quality journalism and innovative projects the Give Light Awards recognize is a testament to the passion and collaborative efforts of our entire staff.”

Other honors throughout the company went to stations in Nashville, Milwaukee, Omaha, San Diego and Triton Digital.
