WION Radio (Ionia) and its many partners will host and broadcast from the 6th annual “Treasures for Troops” campaign, November 11th through 15th. Drop off locations will be available in Ionia, Saranac, Muir, Lowell and Lake Odessa. WION will be broadcasting from a different hosting location each day.
“Treasures for Troops” will be powered again by the Young Automotive Group of Ionia, providing WION with a vehicle for easy transportation of donations. This year, WION is also partnering with the local (Ionia) Moose lodge 998 for a place to store, sort and box the collected proceeds before sending them to our deployed troops. Moose members have also indicated they will help collect items. This is the first year of this partnership and should contribute to a very successful drive.
WION also partners for the second year in a row with high school station WRWW-LP in Lowell, and their students will have their own collection of items, then join us during our broadcast from the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, November 14th.
Blue Star Mothers pack these care packages (“Boxes of Love”) throughout the year to support their military sons and daughters. Items included may seem ordinary to civilians, but are often hard to come
by for deployed soldiers. Each box carries a variety of items including food, clothing, games, utility items, and personal care items. The boxes of love that are sent out with WION’s Treasures for Troops
also contain Christmas Cards decorated at Saranac Elementary School and others. The wrap-up broadcast at Young Automotive’s GM dealership in Ionia on November 15th will include a packing
contest to see if contestants can pack as much in a box as the expert Blue Star Mothers. Last year the community effort sent out 260 boxes.
