Licensees of full-power AM and FM stations and FM translators in Michigan will be filing their license renewal applications with the FCC by June 1, 2020. Starting on April 1, 2020 these stations must run the first of four required pre-filing announcements, announcing to the public that they will be filing their license renewal application. The other pre-filing announcements are to be run on April 16, May 1, and May 16. At least two announcements of the four announcements must air between 7 AM and 9 AM or between 4 PM and 6 PM. This is also a good time to begin to prepare for the license renewal filing itself. Stations should take time now to review their public file for accuracy (see this article for a link to a video prepared for the Indiana Broadcasters all about the importance of the public file, with links to other articles about other renewal-related FCC paperwork requirements), become familiar with the renewal form (Form 303-S), and be sure that the person responsible for filing the form has access to and is familiar with the FCC’s License and Management System (LMS) database, which is where the license renewal application will be filed.
