WKAR, a national leader within Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences, seeks a highly motivated and experienced Senior Producer/Director to join its award-winning television team to lead our local content producers. Required experience includes producing multiple forms of content, knowledge of the entire production process including post production elements; and experience in managing a staff. This position oversees, administers, develops, researches and writes intellectual and creative content for various uses across multiple platforms for WKAR, and assigns, schedules, and manages local producers, ensuring that content is completed on time, within budget, and to WKAR standards. Works with the Senior Director of Content and Communication to develop creative content strategy for WKAR.

·         Leads team of original content producers (60%)

o   Supervise and schedule local producer/directors, complying with MSU and union regulations. Manages the daily affairs of the team, keeping productions on track.

o   Sets and maintains creative, journalistic, station, and PBS standards for content and ensures that the final product is of the highest quality.

o   Proposes, plans and supervises local, state and national productions, including outside contracts, seeing the productions through from conception to final cut.

o   Ensures content is completed on time, within budget, and to agreed artistic and technical standards.

o   Collaborates with all departments to work collectively across the station; works with development to identify funding opportunities and grants as it pertains to local content.

o   Works with Operations Manager to create production budgets, and resolve internal conflict during production.

o   Assists in the marketing and promotion of original content.


·         Content creation (25%)

o   Develop, research, and write new creative and intellectual content for various uses, with direction from Senior Director of Content and Communication.

o   Write/edit scripts.


·         Personnel Management (15%)

o   Supervises, directs, motivates and evaluates staff in order to assure consistency in quantity and quality of work performed.

o   Sets clear direction and priorities for staff of professionals and administrative support personnel.  Promotes excellence through well-defined and measurable goals; inspires and motivates staff through the free flow of information placing staff members’ work within the context of the strategic priorities of the division as well as within the mission of WKAR.

o   Leads by example; fosters a work environment that recognizes and rewards cross-functional collaboration and team-based efforts.  Celebrates current achievements and sets clear expectations for future success.

o   Actively mentors and trains staff, providing frequent opportunities for professional learning and growth; emphasizes retention as a means of increasing capacity and expertise of the team.  Fully leverages human and financial resources and promote greater efficiency.

o   Provides the structure and guidance necessary to promote a high-performance culture that meets the needs and expectations of a successful and diverse community.

Requirements (Experience, Education, Etc.):


·         Bachelor’s degree in Television Production, Theater, Communication, Journalism, English or other appropriate field. A combination of education and experience may be taken into consideration based on the applicant’s credentials.

·         Five to Seven years of experience producing programs for a commercial and/or public broadcasting station.





·         Demonstrates knowledge of storytelling, including: script writing, camera direction, graphic look, set design, lighting design, editing, music composition, pacing and how all these elements help to effectively communicate the message.

·         Experience in producing news content, live broadcast events, short form, long form and fundraising content. Strong writing skills.

·         Knowledge of FCC regulations and federal/state laws governing broadcasting.

External: Extensive, complex contact with numerous outside contacts requiring high levels of professionalism, polish, courtesy and tact in order to best represent the organization and move forward to achieve objectives.

Direction of others: Direct and indirect supervision of individuals.

Direction received: Reports directly to the Senior Director of Content and Communication and receives guidance regarding overall strategic plan and desired outcomes.


Regular Hours of Work

8 a.m. – 5 p.m. M-F, some evening and weekend work as required
