Native Americans in Michigan share their Commercial Tobacco Quit Stories

January 11, 2019

Hello Michigan Broadcaster,|

The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan is requesting that you please air a collection of Public Service Announcements as fill PSA time on your station.

This series of spots focus on four Native Americans in Michigan who have quit using commercial tobacco such as cigarettes, chewing tobacco, cigars, pipes, etc.; and are volunteering their success story to urge other Native Americans to quit using commercial tobacco and keep tobacco sacred.

A disproportionate percentage of American Indian and Alaska Natives use commercial tobacco compared to other ethnic groups in the United States. In 2014, the CDC reported that 26.1% of all American Indian and Alaska Native adults were cigarette smokers. This rate is compared to 19.4% of whites, 18.3% of African Americans, 12.1% of Hispanic Americans, and 9.6% of Asian Americans.

According to the Surgeon General, these commercial tobacco products lead to high rates of cancer.

Cancer is the leading cause of death among American Indian and Alaska Native populations. Overall, American Indians and Alaska Natives face inequities in cancer prevention and control and have not seen the same level of progress as non-Hispanic whites over the past decades. In many regions, American Indian and Alaska Native cancer rates are significantly higher than rates of non-Hispanic whites, with stagnant or increasing rates of lung, colorectal, and breast cancers.

We are hoping that if you choose to air these spots, you could please schedule these spots as listed by file name below:
