Successful Membership Drives for Public Radio
Despite challenging economic times, public radio stations in the state have just completed sucessful fall membership drives. Michigan Radio, which includes WUOM-FM/Ann Arbor, WVGR-FM/Grand Rapids and WFUM-FM/Flint generated over 7400 pledges totalling more than $770,000 from donors across southern Michigan and northern Ohio. Of that, over 3400 pledges came from first time donors to the station, a new all-time high, and a 38% increase in new donors compared to a year ago. Michigan Radio noted that the fall 2008 membership drive finished with a 16 percent increase in total contributions over last fall's campaign; and the station did that with a 20 percent reduction in on-air fundraising hours.

Listeners of WRCJ-FM/Detroit helped the station reach its pledge goal of $226,000. WRCJ President Rich Homberg commented that listeners have "made it clear how much they value the programming on WRCJ." "Every penny of the donations will be put to the best possible use as we preserve and build on this treasured classical and jazz music service that is like no other in Detroit. We think those who make it possible are pretty special too," Homberg said.
