It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of 1985 MAB President Richard Sommerville. Richard S. Sommerville, 90 of Port Huron, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008 in Port Huron Hospital.

FCC Rules on Digital Closed Captioning Rules
The FCC has adopted new procedures for the submission of complaints about the failure to adequately provide closed captioning of video programming carried on television stations and cable systems. Read more from MAB Washington Attorney David Oxenford here.

DTV Ancillary and Supplemental Services Fee Report Due December 1
By December 1, 2008, all commercial and noncommercial digital television (DTV) stations must electronically file an FCC Form 317 with the Commission reporting on whether the station has provided any ancillary and supplementary services during the twelve-month period ending on September 30, 2008. 2008 BCBC Encourages Broadcasters of all Levels to Succeed
Keynote Speaker Glenda Lewis, WXYZ-TV (Detroit) greets BCBC attendees during the Keynote session. The BCBC welcomed more than 130 attendees.

The 2008 Broadcasting Career Builder Conference (BCBC) took place on Saturday, November 8 in Lansing and drew more than 130 people looking to begin or further their career in broadcasting. BCBC speakers encouraged attendees to pursue their passion and never give up. The importance of networking and interning was stressed, as well as being prepared before and during the interview.

2008 Fall Career Fairs a HUGE Success!
The MAB Foundation held its annual Regional Broadcasting and Media Career Fairs across the state of Michigan this fall. The attendance reached more than 500 with 107 call letters represented across the state. New this year was the addition of a Virtual Career Fair.

The MABF's next career fair will be held in conjunction with the Great Lakes Broadcasting Convention & Expo and will be held in Grand Rapids on March 11, 2009 at the DeVos Place.

Members Connecting to their Communities

WLEN/Adrian Hosts "Thank A Vet" Campaign
Lenawee Broadcasting Company's WLEN-FM hosted the third annual "Thank A Vet" campaign on Tuesday, November 11, Veteran's Day.

The event started at 5:00 a.m. and included hour-by-hour sponsors, veteran organizations, and WLEN personnel all working to build awareness and education of Veteran's issues in Lenawee County.

WJLB/Detroit Raises More Than $53,000 With Coats For Kids Radiothon
Clear Channel's WJLB-FM collected 1,224 coats and $53,453 in cash donations to provide warm coats for thousands of children during the 26th Annual Coats for Kids Radiothon.

The event was held November 7 & 8 at the Phoenix Theatres Bel-Air Centre in Detroit. All coats and cash collected went to the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit.

Y-95/St. Joseph-Benton Harbor Presents 12th Annual "Stuff-A-Truck"
Midwest Family Broadcasting's WYTZ-FM is presenting its 12th Annual "Stuff-A-Truck" Food Raiser through November 22nd to restock the warehouse and pantry at the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency.

The event kicked off on Monday, November 17th as the station collected non-perishable foods and personal care items at Roger's Foodland in St. Joseph.

United Way Cake Auction Hosted by WWBR/Big Rapids
Mentor Partner's WWBR-FM hosted The United Way Cake Auction on November 18 and 19. Morning show host Bill Beckwith auctioned cakes, cupcakes and other delicious delectables made up by area supporters to raise money for the local United Way Campaign.

WXYZ-TV Says "Can Do" To The Hungry
E.W. Scripps' WXYZ-TV/Detroit is once again joining with Big Boy Restaurants and the Detroit Area and Clinton Valley Councils of the Boys Scouts of America, to sponsor Operation Can-Do. The 31st annual community service campaign collects and distributes food to the hungry in metropolitan Detroit.

WMGC/Detroit's Jim Harper Goes On The Road For Toys For Tots
Greater Media/Detroit's WMGC-FM morning personality Jim Harper is taking his Magic Morning Show on the road the week of December 1st for the station's annual Toys For Tots Live Broadcasts. Collaborating with the U.S. Marine Corps, Magic 105.1 is asking listeners to bring a new unwrapped toy for those who are less fortunate this holiday season and join them as the station does their morning show live from five different locations.

Successful Membership Drives for Public Radio
Despite challenging economic times, Public radio stations in the state have just completed sucessful fall membership drives. Michigan Radio, which includes WUOM-FM/Ann Arbor, WVGR-FM/Grand Rapids and WFUM-FM/Flint generated over 7400 pledges totalling more than $770,000 from donors across southern Michigan and northern Ohio.

CMU Public Broadcasting is conducting its 2nd annual WCMU Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive. WCMU is partnering with organizations all over their coverage area to collect new or gently-worn sweaters in order to make a difference in the life of someone else.
