Friends of Bill Burton Scholarship
Detroit radio legend Bill Burton passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2014 leaving the entire radio industry reeling at his loss.
Burton, who was 85, was a huge advocate for radio and, at his passing, was president and COO of Detroit Radio Advertising Group. Famous for his catchphrase “Be Fabulous!,” he was known as a huge cheerleader for radio, frequently traveling the country promoting the industry and helping to keep it vibrant.
Radio’s biggest cheerleader once estimated that during his 30-year-plus career he had contributed about $300 million in radio sales. This scholarship was created to honor Bill Burton and his lifetime of dedication to the broadcasting industry.
The MAB Foundation has established an ongoing competitive scholarship to be included in the annual Scholarship Program. Students pursuing a career in a broadcast or media related field are eligible to apply. Each scholarship award amount will be determined by the board of directors annually.
The purpose of this scholarship is to support and encourage future broadcast professionals. This scholarship will promote both classroom study and professional internship/extra-curricular experiences and will allow other candidates, not awarded through their school, to be considered.
The recipients shall exhibit professional promise within the broadcast industry. Factors such as: creativity, leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, perseverance, and natural ability should be considered equally with the more traditional measures of academic performance. The applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, be enrolled in a broadcast or media related degree program at a Michigan college, university or trade school, and have achieved Junior standing.
Each year, applicants not receiving another MAB Foundation scholarship may apply for one competitive scholarship to the MAB Foundation. The Education and Scholarship Committee will serve as the voting committee using the pre-determined rating system and will present the MAB Foundation board with their top candidate for ratification. The award will be presented at the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference & EXPO (GLBC) each year. Students may only be awarded one scholarship per year through the MAB Foundation.
Application and supporting documentation shall include:
2. Letter of recommendation from the instructor or director of department
3. Other recommendations from internships, work, community, or extra-curricular activities
4. 200-word essay outlining "How Are You Going To Be Fabulous In Broadcasting?"
